My name's Rob Hodgkiss. I'm currently working at Zinc as a Product Engineer, building a best-in-class solution for referencing and background checks. This is a space to share my thoughts, and self-promote a little bit.

    My experience

    2025 - present

    Zinc

I currently work at Zinc as a Product Engineer, helping make referencing and background checks easy, instant, and delightful through a combination of automation and smart human-driven solutions.

This is a role that expects a lot of me, but also provides me with the most freedom I've ever had as an engineer to contribute in ways that I think will help improve the product.

    2024 - 2025

    Croner-i

I spent around 18 months at Croner-i (now just Croner) working to provide a modern interactive experience on the web using outdated tech.

This was probably the toughest job I've ever had, but I learned a huge amount about making do with limited tech and picked a fair amount of dev-ops experience.

    2021 - 2023

    Menlo Security

I spent the first couple of years out of university at a secure browsing startup.

I learned a lot about the benefits of startup culture, but also a lot about what didn't work so well for me yet as a junior (in experience, not in job title) engineer.

    2019 - 2020

    Ministry of Defence

An internship that turned out to be an immediate full-time high-pressure job working on sensitive material.

Involved jumping between very different tech stacks every few months and learning them all on the fly. Extremely educational for my career.

    2017 - 2021

    University of East Anglia

First class bachelor's degree w/ hons

Studied for 3 years with a gap year internship. Proud to have achieved the highest grade.

Unintentionally chose a very topical final year project working with AI to classify emotions in real-time from human speech.
